The lower Murray has been having a great run of Callop (Golden Perch) for the last couple of months. With the added hot weather we’ve been having they are really active now and have been nailing Rapala Rippin’ Raps with gusto.
The technique we’ve found best is to tie straight on to the snag and jig the Rippin’ Raps hard in against the timber in the best holding water. Either by getting on to the snag or standing on the edge of the boat the lure can be presented to any fish that would’ve been impossible to get a cast to. Also the fact the lower Murray River is still running quite fast means that using this technique has your lure in the strike zone the entire time it’s in water.
I like to only move my jigs a small amount as this perfectly imitates the rattle sound of yabbies and shrimp moving about in the water. The callop absolutely slam the Rippin’ Raps when they find them and quite often if you don’t feel them you’ll hear them strike when the lure is paused.
The best depth has been about 2 metres of water. These fish in such tight confinements go hard and not every fish makes it to the boat. I find the Rapala Rippin’ Raps noisy and perfect for this style fishing with the hot orange model giving off a large amount of UV light while deep in the snag which callop easily find.
