Great Lake, Tasmania – by Paul Delphin

I had a trip up the mountain to fish Great Lake with the brother inlaw. I was keen as I had a new set of awesome lures; armed with some of the new Rapala Ultra Light Minnows, Ultra Light Shads, and Max Raps in the 07 size.

When we got to the lake my hardest decision was what to tie on first. I settled on the Ultra Light Minnow in the gold colour. This colour pattern has been smashing trout in Tassie this season.

We found a nice looking shore with wind blowing onto it, first cast and I’m on; wow what a way to break the new lure in. I thought then I’m in for a big day. Then for the next couple of hours no fish landed but the amount of taps and follows was just stupid to the point it was getting frustrating. Didn’t seem to matter what I did with the retrieve the trout would not commit.

I started fishing the Max Raps and managed to pull another 4 in the next hour n half; if only I hooked all the follows and hits, it could have been a big numbers day, but that’s fishing.

To sum it up: fish were caught on Ultra Light Minnows in gold - a must have colour if your heading to Tassie; and Max Raps in flake gold, and flake green gold mackerel - fished hard on the shore with a slow roll.

If you haven’t got onto these yet they are the gear.
Cheers Paul Delphin,
