Another day and another hot session on the black bream with the Rapala Ultra Light Minnow 04; a great versatile slow sinking lure which can be cast, twitched, paused and retrieved for bream with great results.
I headed out last weekend to have a go at the local bream and tied on a Glass Gold ULM04 pattern and after half a dozen casts the first fish hit the lure. I was fishing the edge of a weedbed as the tide was running out and the slow sinking feature of the ULM was perfect as it allowed me to get the lure right down by casting upstream and working the lure back with a series of twitches and pauses. Most of the fish were holding down deeper out of the current at about 1.5-2m depth so by mid retrieve I was hooking up solid.
It was a busy afternoon with around 25 fish falling to the same lure and plenty of missed strikes. While there were no thumpers it was great fun and at the end of the session all fish were released carefully.
It just goes to show that slow sinking lures are dynamite on bream. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that suspending lures are the only lures for bream. Give them a go you might be suprised!
