Slams are here in a big way.
Yes there are lots of soft plastic type lures on the market and perhaps your thinking that this is just another one. It really isn’t. Slams are a bait that fish will actually eat. Just watch the video on the opening page and you will see what I mean. Over this summer so far I have been giving the Slams an absolute flogging around my hometown of Wollongong and along the South Coast of NSW. In fact I have barely used any other form of lure.
What’s working for me is fairly simple fishing that produces excellent results. First port of call was the five islands off Port Kembla where year after year the Kings turn up in numbers. Using the 5” and 7” Jerk Shad in the Great White colour I have caught almost 100 kings over three trips. Most of these fish are only rats, with a few bigger boys amongst them and a few smoking me on light gear. I just get my boat about 20 metres from the islands and cast my Slam into the wash with as little weight as possible.
I have found various methods of retrieval are working including a flat out fast retrieve, an erratic jerking retrieve and the stop start that sends them nuts. With the stop start retrieve I cast the Slam into the edge of the wash and let it sink for around 5 seconds then retrieve really fast for about two or three metres and then let it sink again. On the second drop the kings just can’t resist and smash the Slams time after time.
If the Kings aren’t playing I travel out to some shallow reefs looking for Snapper. This time around you can use the Jerk Shad or the 5-inch Minnow. My favourite colours are Cargo and Nitro Chicken. This time around I’m using a 10oz Jig head depending on current and simply just cast out and watch the drop to the bottom.
I have found that snapper tend to hit on the drop most times. As soon as I start to work the lure off the bottom a little more I begin to catch other species like Morwong and Wrasse. Just remember to strike hard when you feel a little tap on the drop. A small tap can be a big Snapper.
In my book these lures are no fad. It’s proven that fish pheromones actually trigger fish to feed and that’s what makes these SLAMS so good. Give them a go and see for yourself.
See you on the water – Mark Berg.
Hi Mark, sorry I didn’t get to meet you at my brothers house pre-Christmas but from what my sister tells me I was lucky not to be there with my intoxicated relo’s. Catch you next time.
Anyhow, just a quick question re Slam Bait. Myself and a couple of mates are heading out to Coolendel in mid Feb to chase a few Bass in our Hobies and was wondering if the Slam Baits are effective on Bass? Also where can I buy the Slam baits locally.
Cheers
Wayne
